Upcoming Events
Fri. 27th Sept. - Coffee Morning Dore Old School 10:00-12:00 am. See some unusual Roman artefacts and an opportunity to meet other members and chat about things archaeological with Tea/Coffee and biscuits all for just £3.00.
Fri, 5th July - Group visit to Southwell Workhouse.
We have booked a group visit to the Workhouse at Southwell on Friday 5th July.
The workhouse was built in 1824 to provide food, shelter and medical care for 160 of the poorest people in the area. The design was a blueprint for workhouses in the rest of the country and it is the most complete workhouse in existence. It is Grade 2 listed and the last inmates only left in the early 1990s.
We will meet at the Workhouse in Southwell at 10-30 for a tour of the site with a guide at 11-00. There is free parking two hundred metres from the main buildings. The address is: The Workhouse, Upton Road, Southwell NG25 0PT.
Phone 01636 817260.
The property is National Trust so if you are a member bring your membership cards. If you are not a member admission is £15 per person. Please give this to Nigel on arrival, cash please, and he will deal with the group payment. If you are not a Time
Travellers’ member there is a £3 fee for non-members.
There is a café opening at 10-30, and an area with picnic tables for eating a packed lunch. After the outside guided tour we will need to split into smaller groups for an inside tour of the Workhouse due to floor loading levels on the first and second floors. There are room guides to answer questions and digital devices are available.
For those wishing to make a day of it, it is well worth driving into Southwell for a visit to Southwell minster. There is no charge but donations are expected.
If you would like to come on the visit please reply to [email protected]
Telephone 0114 2217048 Mobile 07956 988726
If you let me have your name/names, an email address and a phone number I will then confirm your place on the trip. Can you also say please whether you are a member of the National Trust or not. Numbers are limited to 25 places.
You need to be aware that there are several flights of steep narrow stairs in the main Workhouse building to the upper two floors. Let me know if access is a problem because there is an iPad with a virtual tour for those who can only access the ground floor.
